Young learners color, craft, and enjoy a simple Ice Age play set. It practices coloring, cutting, folding, and pasting skills while introducing students to basic Ice Age vocabulary. Easy assembly directions are provided on each page.
Students may use the mammoth and Ice Age man doll as props while explaining and demonstrating ways Ice Age people hunted mammoths. |
Extension Activities
- Draw at least five things that might be found inside an Ice Age hut on the lower inside half of the hut page. Refold the page so the drawing is on the outside. Set the Ice Age dolls in front of it to create an indoor play scene.
- Set the hut on one large or two small white, light green, or tan piece(s) of construction paper. Draw an Ice Age landscape around the hut.
- Using the Ice Age man doll and mammoth as props, students explain and demonstrate ways Ice Age people hunted mammoths.
- Instead of pasting the top of the mammoth closed, draw and label at least five ways Ice Age people used mammoth parts on the inside of the piece. Fasten the mammoth closed with a paper clip.
Books for children about the Ice Age are very difficult to come by. There are a few around, though. Check out the books of interest and curriculum links at the bottom of this post. They provide good-to-excellent information and illustrations that may assist students in drawing the extension activities. All are still in print, except for Usborne's Prehistoric World. Although, it's easily found in used condition online. All of the books may be read for free from Open Library as well.
